MARION VALDER After raising a family and teaching in schools in the Westcountry for many years, I decided to develop my long standing love of ceramics by enrolling in a course of formal study. I have a keen interest in history and archaeology, and many of the forms of my work have been greatly influenced by pre-historic pottery as well as the simple yet dynamic shapes created by craftsmen of less sophisticated cultures. But for me the greatest appeal is in the process by which clay is turned into enduring ceramic. I am fascinated by the patterns caused by heat, smoke, flame, and the variations thereof which can be introduced by resist materials and the addition of various chemicals. I take great delight in orchestrating the firing, and the unknown, unexpected and spontaneous results contribute in great measure to the creative euphoria I have come to experience as a practitioner in this medium.
